Matthew Rogers - Barrister - London & BVI

Matthew is a commercial disputes barrister. In addition to exercising rights of audience before the English courts, he is also authorised to conduct litigation and is called to the bar of British Virgin Islands.

His primary experience is in High Court commercial litigation, including contractual, company, shareholder, partnership, insolvency, civil fraud and professional negligence disputes. He also has experience in appeals to the Court of Appeal (England and Eastern Caribbean) and the Supreme Court. His work has spanned multiple jurisdictions. He also has experience in international arbitration (institutional and ad hoc). 

His work includes:

  • Successfully appearing as sole counsel in a 1-day High Court hearing (Business List) in relation to a security for costs application.

  • Acting on a 7-figure professional negligence High Court claim (Business List), including settling pleadings as junior counsel and appearing as sole counsel at a CCMC.

  • Acting on a heavily contested winding-up petition (in excess of $20 million), including associated interlocutory applications and appeals (Eastern Caribbean).

  • Settling pleadings and advising on a 7-figure professional negligence claim (sole counsel)

  • Successfully appearing as sole counsel in a High Court hearing (Insolvency & Companies List) to restrain advertisement of and/or strike out a winding-up petition.

  • Advising on a complex LLP dispute.

  • Settling pleadings on a 7-figure High Court (Business List) civil fraud claim.

  • Acting as junior counsel in relation to a High Court unfair prejudice petition (Insolvency and Companies List), including interlocutory application and permission to appeal.

  • Acting as lead fee earner in relation to a High Court trial (Insolvency & Companies List) concerning liquidators’ remuneration. 

  • Acting on an LCIA Arbitration (sums involved in excess of £100 million) in relation to a litigation funding agreement.

  • Successfully appearing as sole counsel in a High Court trial (London Circuit Commercial Court) against a former top 20 Times Rich List businessman concerning unpaid sums under multi-million pound loan agreements. 

  • Successfully appearing as sole counsel in the High Court (Commercial Court) in a claim to enforce a multi-million dollar foreign judgment debt by way of a third party debt order against a publicly listed FTSE 250 company.

  • Acting on a circa $70 million LCIA Arbitration in the oil and gas sector. 

  • Acting as junior counsel on a 7-figure s.423 Insolvency Act claim in the High Court (Business List).

  • Acting as sole counsel in relation to a 7-figure professional negligence claim (High Court, KBD), reaching a successful settlement. 

Matthew studied undergraduate and master's degrees in Law at St John’s College, University of Cambridge. His master’s specialised in Commercial Law (First Class). He is a Lord Denning Scholar of Lincoln’s Inn and was awarded Outstanding on the Bar Professional Training Course.
